Qualifications in childcare
Qualifications you may come across include:
- NVQ levels 2 and 3 in Child Care and Education - involve practical workplace experience
- CACHE Diploma in Childcare and Education (DCE) - a two year childcare course covering ages 0-7 studied at local authority colleges as well as residential fee-paying colleges, equivalent to NVQ level 3 and replacing the NNEB
- Certificate in Child Care and Education (CCE) – the one-year version of the DCE, equivalent to NVQ level 2
- BTEC in nursery nursing – a more academic two year course
- NAMCW - a stepping stone to the NVQ and usually studied at school
- The Norland Certificate and the Chiltern Certificate indicate that the candidate has completed a residential vocational course
Non-qualified nannies
Not all nannies are qualified. Many have extensive experience and good references which qualify them in a different but very practical way. Since the EU expansion, there has been an influx of Eastern European nannies with fluent English and the added bonus of being educated to degree level in their own country, which is not always the case with British nannies.
Tax and National Insurance Contributions
It is the employer's duty to pay the nanny's tax and NICs (as well as employer's NICs), even if the nanny is a foreign student, as long as she is resident in the UK. We recommend Nannytax to our clients (0845 226 2203 or www.nannytax.co.uk).Registered Nannies
If you use a registered nanny and if your employer operates a childcare voucher scheme (www.childcarevouchers.co.uk) you can save tax and national insurance on the first £55 of her weekly salary.
The registration scheme is now run by Ofsted rather than Surestart (as of September 07). To register, your nanny should call 08456 404040 or fill in the online form at www.ofsted.gov.uk .
No actual qualifications are required, just evidence that she has knowledge of the common core skills. She also needs to have a First Aid Certificate
(see www.sja.org.uk/sja/training-courses.aspx ) and public liability insurance
(see www.mortonmichel.co.uk/nanny/intro.htm ) but these do not need to be produced on registration.
The cost of registration is currently £108 which includes the cost of a CRB disclosure. The registration fee is usually paid by the parents as they stand to gain financially, although some nannies are already registered. Registration can take 12-16 weeks to complete.
